The beginning of Nowruz coincides with the beginning of New Year in the Persian calendar and in this calendar spring is the first month of the year. Nowruz festival starts with the first day of spring. In Iranian culture and in Iranian minds, Nowruz and spring are two inseparable words. In the word Nowruz means new day. Passing through the cold winter, the blossoming trees and the greenery of nature and the sun that is shining in spring, all promise renewal and a new life. For thousands of years Iranians are celebrating this event. Nowruz has many traditions including cleanliness, wearing new clothes, meeting relatives and expressing New Year’s greetings and it is an opportunity to reconcile. History goes back to the Zoroastrian religion, so Nowruz is rooted in Iranian national culture. It has been registered as an intangible heritage in UNESCO. Not only in Iran but across a wide range from West Asia to Central Asia Nowruz is being celebrated every year.
